Frivol No. 1 & No. 2 ! ...

Frivols are here! 

What are Frivols?  Frivols are these collectable tins by Moda containing their newest size of precut....7x7inch squares and more!

Frivols No. 1 contains the fabric from 'Hello, Darling' collection by Bonnie & Camille, a 'Kindred' quilt pattern and a bonus Frivol or two! 

With background needed of 1.5 yards, and more for binding and backing- it's not quite a complete quilt kit.  The quilt, ' Kindred', will finish at at about 42 x 42 inches. The directions are simple to follow and are printed in colour with illustrations to help keep you on track.  

Fun extras in this Frivol include; an extra block pattern to make with your own fabric and it lists 2 sizes, 4 &1/2 inch or 6 inch finished block.  On that pattern card, there is a inspirational quotation.  Making these extra blocks will lead to a fun sampler quilt, Moda is calling, 'Maker'.  Also included in this first tin, is some twill tape, also fun and frivolous. 

I think we let the 'goods out of this tin' for this 1st one!  It's hard to explain if you cannot see it and make a purchasing descion based on a tin wrapped in plastic is hard.  They will retail for $64.95 plus tax.

A Minick & Simpson line, Polka Dots & Paisleys ! The quilt pattern for this design is ' Faithful' and a couple of Frivols round out the tin!  

No 2 needs only binding and backing for additional fabric required but it finishes at 26 x 26 inches, a bit smaller than the Frivol No 1.

Is a line of beautiful nautical inspired prints by Janet Clare for Moda fabrics...

This is a jelly roll opened up to show some of the whales.  There are also seagulls, outlines of schooners, coral/ seaweed and more.  Ranging through ivory, sand to dark blue, the colours are very reminiscent of the Bay of Fundy although Janet Clare is from the United Kingdom.

So, you may wonder why there is a jelly roll open...I cut 2 more 2 & 1/2 inch strips and cut those 2, plus the same print one from the jelly roll into 2 &1/2 squares and added one square onto the end of a shortened strip and another square onto the other end before attaching the next strip in the roll- lengthwise...working towards...yes, a jelly roll quilt !  

Enquiring minds, want to know what a jelly roll will make.  It's worth $49.95- is it enough to make a quilt top?  How big is the top?  So, Mrs P's decided, to see, but just adding end to end, even on slant, didn't really appeal...then there was the square added in between each strip....hmmmm, that's might be fun.  (Only the two lighter strips are used as extra )

So far, after just about an hour, the strips are joined end to end with the square in between.  Now, to find the other end and sew 1 seam lengthwise end to end.  Then those pieces are joined lengthwise and sewn.  This is done until you reach the desired width.  You will have 2 inch  horizontal strips of fabric making the quilt.  Thinking of the waves rippling in at the beach or the ridge lines on the sandbars made by the tide on the way out- I think this is an ideal use of this method of using jelly roll strips.

        Teddy is still knee deep in making hexies! 

Teddy managed to finish one of the hexagon centres and he wanted to see what more of the project would look like...

He's trying to decide between the soft pond or soft primrose...

He will keep you updated but he whispered that progress may be slowed as the shop needs to be tidied up for a couple of special vistors next Sat- March 8th.
